Natural habitats of birds

Among the countries that offer more exotic species to the world, those that have tropical forests are the first, since they are the place of origin of a large number of these birds. For example, the turpial is the national bird of Venezuela, where the cute cardinal also lives.

The quetzal is found in the jungles of GuatemalaMexico and Costa Rica, a country where we can also find more than forty species of hummingbird and several species of toucan.

But if we talk about the jungle, we can not ignoring Brazil, since it ranks third in terms of the number of individuals in South America. And it has the Amazon rainforest, where, for example, the pendulous bird lives, a species that also inhabits other areas of Central America and the Caribbean islands.

The hyacinth macaw has fewer trees where they nest due to deforestation caused by livestock, fires and hydrographic plans of the country.

Colombia has become a mandatory place for birds that migrate in America, and with 20% of all bird kind all over the world, it becomes a paradise for bird lovers.

A curious and endemic species of the place is the little crimson-rumped toucanet . And, without going into detail, we can find many species, with more types of toucans, macaws, parrots, etc.

Other parts of the world can also be included, since the cockatoos, like the budgies, come from Australia. And there are birds that are part of this classification, as well as pigeons, waders, ducks and some gallinaceous (galliformes), whose habitats are scattered all over the globe.

Classification of tropical birds

The different species of tropical birds that we find are:

  • Psittaciformes: macaws, parrots, parakeets, parrots, parakeets, cockatoos and parrots.
  • Passeriformes: songbirds of colorful colors (goldfinch, finch, canary, hoopoe, oriole).
  • Columbiformes: pigeons, including domestic ones.
  • Columbiformes: pigeons, doves, including domestic ones.
  • Galliformes: chickens, quail, turkeys or pheasants.

Generally, exotic birds are non-native birds, which come from the tropical forests of America, Africa and Australia, their natural habitats.

We can also find some species, such as non-yellow canaries, which are considered exotic because they are not originally found in nature, but have been created through a selective process.

If you want to have one of these birds as a pet, whether it is a small bird or if you want to have a large bird, you must first be informed about its possession and what papers are necessary so that everything is in order and not contribute to traffic of exotic animals, some of which are in danger of extinction. Therefore, it is good that you go to a store, since the sale between individuals is illegal.

Then you must learn the care that these birds need and choose the place where you put them at home, the temperature of the room, the cage you use, there diet and how to take care of them so thy do not get sick.

When you decide to have a parrot as a pet, you have to really love it and know what species to choose , because this birds demand affectionate treatment. And also you have to be aware of the inconveniences that can occur before you buy it, so you do not regret later, as it is very sad to see birds that have been abandoned by their owners in the city parks.

You can also have a partner that breeds, then, it is convenient to know how to act in case they have chicks.

All this information can be found on, but when you go to the store, inform yourself well so that your bird will be happy and live many years with you, since they are birds that live a long time, in some cases like the macaw, as much as the humen or more.

If you want to dedicate yourself to breeding birds, you  have to learn what conditions you should have, how much space should be counted; the temperature ; what cages to use;and make sure  that the light reaches them well; the availability of feeders, drinkers and nests; as well as the time when it breeds each species.

Hybridization (the crossing of individuals of different species) is more complicated than breeding and it is difficult to succeed, since the female, for example, may not incubate the eggs or reject the male or the cage etc.

Other threats are global warming, the loss of natural habitats, forest fires, illegal hunting for commercialization and breeding, the introduction of predatory species.

On the other hand, the females born from hybridization are sterile and do not sing, so people do not usually want them.

And as for the introduction of non-endemic species, this usually poses another threat, since those that settle in the new place unbalance the ecosystem and the native species are displaced, invaded. This is not always the case, but it does happen too often. We can see it now in the case of the Argentine parrot that, in a short period of time, has settled in parks in the city as if it had always lived in Spain.

Because the trade of species, both animals and plants, is a global business, in 1973 the CITES, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora was created, so that trade becomes a sustainable way and not endanger the survival of the species.

Today, almost every country in the world is part of the CITES Convention.

Thanks to organizations that work for the conservation of animals and plants, it is getting to protect habitats where these birds live, as well as creating sanctuaries in which they can live in peace.
